On visit at Stockfisch-Records
This promised to become an exciting appointment: From January 12th to 13th 2007 we were invited to visit Günter Pauler's Stockfisch-Records and assist in a live direct-to-disc recording of the Bass Face Swing Trio. The studio was still looking for a very high end compressor for processing the mixdown...
Recording studio, record label and Direct Metal Mastering united under one roof – something you won't find every day! However, at Pauler Acoustics this unique combination has been part of the formula for success for many years. The picture shows the cutting head of the impressive Neumann DMM machine. A technical marvel in terms of mechanical precision...
Here we see the engineers at work: Hans-Jörg Maucksch (l), Christian Struck (m) and Günter Pauler (r). While the mix is produced on high grade Sonosax desks, the alpha compressor processes the signal sum which is especially critical in direct-to-disc applications.
The elaborate use of microphones on the excellent Fazioli grand piano shows that no compromises where accepted for this recording. All three mics are custom constructions tailored to the high acoustic demands of Günter Pauler.
Last but not least comes Jean-Philippe Wadle, who in his function as bass player completes the trio from the low end. While he and Florian can keep eye contact, Thilo plays in the next room and therefore has to rely on his headphones – luckily the band members know each other well and share a good lot of playing experience…
Done! Hendrik Pauler presents the perfect result of the first recording run. Because of security reasons both sides are recorded again after a short break, and because the band plays great variations of the diverse themes, choosing only one of the two fine versions as final release is anything but easy.
