Sound On Sound 08/2008
Paul White: "The mpressor is one of the most versatile compressors I’ve ever come across. Its low distortion, ultra-transparent circuitry makes it perfectly suited to mastering and mixing in the traditional sense, while those weapons-grade extras make it invaluable for beefing up drums or bass – or just about anything else you want to energise."

Réalisason 04/2008
Frank Ernould: "Mild settings make the mpressor be a well-behaved, efficient and transparent compressor, able to control the most tormented signals without being noticed. Tickle it a bit too much […] and you will reveal the beast within, turning an acoustic snare drum into an 8-bit drum-machine-snare, a Garage Band loop into a heavy-weight-beat."

Simon Tillbrook: "The elysia mpressor turned out to be quite an eye opener. This is far more than just another compressor with a few clever bits, this is a high-end sonically stunning and highly creative device, and the more time you have with the elysia mpressor the more you will understand and the harder it will be to let it go."

Recording Magazin 03/2008
Stephan Kirschner: "The mpressor gives studio projects a creative push and invites to experiment. […] The unit takes a little bit of practice in order to understand all of its new possibilities, but all the more light bulb moments you will encounter. The mpressor will inspire anybody from the experimental electronic musician to the classic rock engineer."

Hannes Bieger: "If you are interested in a 'modern' all-round compressor that can also turn into a creative sound monster by all means, the mpressor is for you. Not only does it cover the 'standards', but it shines as a loud-maker and convinces with its spectacular sound effects that partly have never been heard before."

Studio Magazin 01/2008
Fritz Fey: "The mpressor is […] an absolutely unique design that outranges the limits of conventional concepts by far. The complete circuitry layout is a true original. No matter if it is used for tracking or as a buss compressor or maybe even for mastering applications – the mpressor holds all the aces. Hats off!"

Joel Hamilton: "I can't recommend the mpressor highly enough. It truly is a glimpse at the future of compressors, and even fifty years from now I am not sure we will see an all-analog box that can do all the amazing things the mpressor can do… unless the geniuses at elysia figure out a way to outdo themselves."

Hagen Fin: "The sound of the mpressor is an explicit antipode to clean digital compressors. Here the correlations between amplitude modulation and THD virtually seem to jump into your face, with the bottom line that everything simply sounds much more alive than a digital emulation. Extraordinary! A must-have item…"

Michael Nötges: "Analog does not necessarily mean vintage: because of its innovative features, the mpressor is as modern as it is state of the art concerning its concept and construction. It sounds excellent and leaves nothing to be desired in terms of flexible dynamics processing and fancy sound design."

"I love both the hardware one and the software mpressor. I use the hardware so much for one of my drum sub compressors that I actually find it hard to mix without it. The software version is pretty damn true to the hardware. I must admit and I am using it either to bring life to sounds or to get the pumping effect that the mpressor is so good at."

"A very well made mix compressor, either gentle or extreme, the swiss-army-knife of ‘de-compression’. If we had to keep only one dynamic tool it would be the mpressor."

"A very well made mix compressor, either gentle or extreme, the swiss-army-knife of ‘de-compression’. If we had to keep only one dynamic tool it would be the mpressor for its versatility and true efficiency. And you get the great design and a new vision of compression/leveling on top of it!"

"Love it. The most flexible comp money can buy IMO. Although the mpressor can destroy any signal to pieces with ease, it is a very pristine unit. I use mine frequently in mastering. Think of the mpressor as a much more powerful super duper mastering quality Distressor. Clean color wise but with infinite possibilities compression wise."

"The mpressor has been used on almost all our sessions since we've had it. I really like it and so does Ray. All of the recent Kinks Live remixes we have been doing have had a bit of mpressor action on the drums. I especially like the GR limit button which can be used to tighten the bottom end of sounds. I.e. if you set the mpressor to be really pumpy on a drum sub group, then dial in the GR limit, the kick and the bottom end of the sub group tightens and in some case extends, almost like a harmonic generator, in a very subtle way. When used in more gentle ways, like on a vocal sub group, it brings out the air and room ambiance in the vocals without adding harshness or sibilance. I think it's an amazing bit of kit!"

"At the Hi-End Gear show in Cologne I met Dominik and Ruben at their booth. Shortly after Ruben gave me a demo of the mpressor I knew that this was what I wanted. The mpressor I mean - not Ruben ;-) This compressor is really the very best of German engineering art. It compresses without artifacts, even when extreme settings are used. On the drum buss, it makes the drums tight and punchy and brings the room to the front in a quality I have never heard before. The use of the Auto Fast function makes it easy to control fast transients of the snare. My first choice for drum compression and sound shaping!"

"Almost every wall in my studio is gear... lots of compressor choices, modular synth racks, Pultec, ADL670... you know, all the best stuff. And I love the mpressor! I even put it in a place of dignity: right in the middle of many compressors long considered 'classics'. The mpressor now lives in that rack, because to me, it is an instant classic! It is absolutely incredible. I am mixing a very heavy record right now, and the mpressor is working HARD on a parallel drum bus... Incredible piece of machinery you have made."

"The mpressor redefines the meaning of compression. It looks at it from a different angle and basically throws the whole traditional concept on it's head."

"With the huge collection I own and use everyday, it's hard to be impressed by a new compressor. The mpressor redefines the meaning of compression. It looks at it from a different angle and basically throws the whole traditional concept on it's head. I may not be a rocket scientist but I'm not a moron either, yet it took me three attempts at being explained how the unit worked before the light bulb went on. It's not because of its complexity but because I've never thought about compression this way. The result of how a drum room can be manipulated to create new rhythms, or a piano can shimmer, or how much faster it is than anything else including plugins, is on another level and cannot not be duplicated with any of my other compressors. So it deserves space in one of my racks. Unfortunately, this was not good news for one of my other compressors that thought life was secure in Soundtowers."

"I didn't have the chance to fully run the mpressor through its paces yet, but it has already saved me on a mix once. The recording, comprising of a string quartet, an organ and the counter-tenor Gérard Lesne had been done in a church. The singer was too far from the orchestra and his mic had picked up too much ambience. It was impossible to give presence to the vocals. By multing the vocal track to the mpressor set for some hard compression that I fine-tuned with the GR Limiter (great feature), and mixing the two channels, I got the presence back on the voice and saved the mix. I’m sure no other compressor would have made it possible. The mpressor has a very nice tone. I also use it for my analog transfers (Nagra 4S), with just a tiny bit of gain reduction to get the best out of my AD converters."

"What can I say? I'm totally thrilled. For all the differences of the two units they are very flexible. That is really a difference compared to usual compressors which, after all, offer one single possibility: more or less, with their specific characteristics always staying on top. The mpressor, however, is a true hammer concerning its flexibility and uncompromising sound. A pure drumkit, no plugins or EQs, only the mpressor in the subgroup: infinite punch! Of course the alpha is much more elegant in its compression characteristics. It adapts to any material almost imperceptible. Sometimes you do not really feel the compression; it's more something like super fine leveling. You get the feeling that the alpha already knows the music and what to do with it. Especially the combination of both compressors on subgroups - which I use all of the time - is the perfect match."
